My Step by Step Daily Skincare Routine

Writer: Felicia T. SimpsonFelicia T. Simpson

In this winter season, my skin needed some real TLC, so my friends over at Factor Five sent me their anti-aging cream, a cream to apply underneath my eyes and on my lashes. I’m very disciplined when it comes to my daily skin care routine but these steps can be used or simplified if you are a beginner. I don’t always have time to get facials done professionally so I try my best to take great care of my skin daily with any products that I use.

Recently I did a poll with my Facebook friends brainstorming new ideas for both my blogs and website. Well, a few people wanted to know my step by step daily skin care routine and naturally, I am very happy to share the following skin care steps that I use with you.

Step 1: Drink plenty of water

You may be wondering why I would suggest drinking plenty of water as my first step. I believe doing this has led to my skin being clear and smooth before putting any product on it. I’ve shared before that I have combination skin so it is imperative that I keep my skin hydrated from the inside-out. So I encourage you to start by reducing your daily intake of sugary and highly carbonated drinks and drink plenty of water instead.

Step 2: Cleanse

So here’s the first step that you’re probably the most familiar with for your skin care routine: cleansing your face. Until recently, I would apply my cleansing products only once. But after watching several YouTubers apply their cleansing product, I learned to do it TWICE. The reason you cleanse your face twice is to make sure that you remove all of the dirt, oil, sunscreen, dead skin cells, etc., that your skin has accumulated throughout the day or night. Afterwards, your skin will look vibrant and ready for your next step: toner.

Step 3: Toner

This step is optional but I highly recommend it. If you’re just starting out and don’t want to purchase too many products, stick with just purchasing a cleanser and moisturizer for your skin type.

According to an article in Today, “Toners can help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing, reducing the penetration of impurities and environmental contaminants into the skin. It can even protect and remove chlorine and minerals present in tap water (2019).” For me, this step is just a reassurance that I’ve completely cleaned my face.

Step 4: Eye Cream or Strips

If you’re like me and have dark circles underneath your eyes (doctors say it’s hereditary), then you definitely want to add eye creams or eye strips to your daily skin care regimen. The skin underneath your eyes are prone to dryness, wrinkles and puffiness also so keeping them moisturized is important even if you can’t completely remove dark circles.

Step 5: Serum

I preferably use serums more at night because they typically tighten my skin which is needed. Most serums have key ingredients in them that help with reducing redness, pigmentation and wrinkles. In the day time (usually on the weekend when I’m not in a rush), I apply my serums right before the final step in my daily skin care routine: moisturizing.

Step 6: Moisturize

Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! My skin L-O-V-E-S plenty of moisture. My T-zone area gets dry several times a day so I find myself, applying a moisturizer throughout my day. I keep a facial moisturizer in my purse, car and desk at work so that my face can stay moisturized at any moment that I need it to. If you don’t use anything else from this step by step guide, please, USE A MOISTURIZER daily!!!!!!!

Everyone’s skin type is different and therefore your daily skin care routine should fit your needs. If you have severe issues with your skin, consult with a dermatologist and/or your licensed esthetician. If you need help picking out any skin care products, the images in this post is what I’m currently using and you can also take a look at any of my previous beauty posts here for ideas.
