Take Your Personal Time Off

Writer: Felicia T. SimpsonFelicia T. Simpson

In Beyonce’s song Formation lyrics, the songstress said, “I see it, I want it, I stunt; yellow-bone-it I dream it, I work hard, I grind ‘til I own it.” If this is our everyday mentality (it's mine as well), when you do we rest? Everyone needs to take some personal time off from their hustles to simply rest. In this digital world we live in, resting or taking personal time off looks weak and frowned upon. But to avoid burnouts, you need to take personal time off and use that time for yourself. Your job, children, families, bff’s and whomever else, will be just fine without you for either a couple of hours or a couple of days.

I know that women use their annual sick and vacation times to care for our beautiful children or elderly parents but please take some of that much needed time and take care of YOU! This time is to be spent doing whatever you like doing or if you have a side hustle, and need to take off for building your business or traveling for your business ….DO IT! Every single trip I take out of town, I make sure I’m utilizing that personal time off to if nothing else, network and meet new potential clients.

Now, I’m not telling you to go and create more work for yourself on your personal day off (unless you specifically have a project or a launch of a new product or service that needs your attention fully for a longer period of time in a day. I highly suggest NOT letting anyone know that you are taking those personal days off if you plan to get some work done, because as wonderful as the people we love are, they will become a distraction texting or calling you all day and nothing will get done!

Get up and get dressed just like you normally do. Next, get the kids and hubby off to work and you will be home free to take your personal day off in peace! If you don’t do this, those cute kids of yours will suddenly become ill and want to play hooky from school, hubby will clear his work schedule also and you’ll be stuck, at home with a full household just as if it were the weekend…..smh! The goal here is to act normal so that you can enjoy your personal time OFF.

If you’re a single woman, put away the phone and enjoy your personal time off. Me and one of my best friends used to call off work together!!! On those days, we would binge watch television shows, sip adult beverages starting at 8am lol, talk and take quick naps until it was time for me to return back to reality with my children and family. Those days were the most much needed fun that I needed. If you don’t have a friend like that, then work on taking your personal days off and doing whatever it is that you want. YOU DESERVE IT!

We all need our own space from the world around us to simply be present in the moment and/or use our personal time to create a new product or service for our evolving business. It’s ok to still have the stability of a 9-5 and be a pro at side hustling but make sure you carve out some personal days off on your busy schedule, to take care of you.

What are you going to do with your next personal time off? Post your plans in the comments.
